When do I need new dentures?
Dentures have a average life expectancy of anywhere between 5-8 years. After this time the material can start to become brittle and the acrylic teeth will show signs of wear. The oral structure also changes significantly which differs between each person and will eventually cause an ill fitting denture or discomfort. After this time if they cannot be restored, new dentures will be necessary.
What can i expect with new dentures?
When making the transition to life with new dentures its important to take into account the following:
Because your full or partial dentures are new, they may feel large and bulky in the mouth, your lips may feel like they are being pushed forward and you may even experience a slight gag reflex. For the first couple of days your mouth will increase with levels of saliva and sore spots. Eating and speaking will also create some challenges. These sensations and problems are normal and after some time your mouth will adjust. Do not expect your dentures to function as your natural teeth once did. Dentures only function about 25% as efficiently as natural teeth. Learn to know the limitations of your dentures and adjust your living habits accordingly. Here are some helpful tips to help speed up your transition with dentures:
How do I look after my Dentures?
Give them a break – Taking your new dentures out at night to help the mouth tissue recover from wearing them during the day. If removing them at night is not an option, try to take them out for some period during the day. Soak the dentures in water if they have metal clasps or if the don’t have any metal soak they may be soaked in half vinegar, half water solution or a special denture cleaner can be used for heavily stained dentures once a month.
