Relining or refitting of both a full and partial denture is carried out when a denture has become loose or unstable but is still in a good condition and it’s not necessary to make a new denture.
What are the causes of a loose or unstable denture?
When a denture is first made it is customised to mould to the shape of your mouth, but due to the natural ageing process the mouth changes shape. Bone loss occurs immediately after tooth loss because the ridge structure no longer supports the root of a tooth. The majority of the bone structure will be reduced in the first few months then gradually decreases over your lifetime. Some other causes that can change the fit of a denture can be due to weight loss and disease.
What are the signs of a loose or unstable denture?
Signs that might imply that a reline is needed can be looseness, soreness, chewing inefficiency, aesthetic changes and collection of food.
What is the process of relining a denture?
Relining a denture is done by resurfacing the fitting surface with new acrylic. An impression would need to be taken inside the fitting surface of the denture, and then the voids where the impression material has filled will be replaced with new material in the laboratory.
When should you get your denture relined?
Most dentures need to be relined every 2 – 3 years, and where teeth have recently been extracted a reline might be needed after 6 months. If left too long, loose dentures can induce more stress on the supporting tissues, which will increase the risk of further resorption. Loose dentures can not only cause you stress if you’re worried about them falling out, but they can affect your eating, speaking and confidence. It is recommended to seek professional advice as soon as you start noticing these changes.
At TDC, most relines can be turned around within the same day and some health funds can cover up to 80% of the cost. For a denture examination with our Dental Prosthetist, please call us on 9317 7777.
