Have you ever wondered how dentures actually stay in place? Or, are you struggling with loose-fitting dentures and not sure about your options for a better fit?
It’s a common question amongst our patients, and it might surprise you to learn there are several ways in which this works, so rest assured we can find a solution for you!
You could have a perfect looking set of dentures, but if they don’t stay in place, that’s not a great outcome. One of the most important functional aspects of a denture is how secure it can stay in place, and you will find that having a secure denture will give you more confidence and comfort, as well as assist with eating, laughing, smiling and speaking more effortlessly.
Some ways dentures can be secured include:
- Denture clasps or retainers: normally made from a metal wire, these are used in partial dentures to help secure the denture in position around remaining natural teeth.
- Denture adhesive: comes in various forms such as a powder, paste or wafers, and helps keep a denture well in place for the day ahead.
- Fit: having a denture that is fitted well by an experienced Dental Prosthetist is very important from the first and final impressions or moulds, to the manufacture process and final fitting and adjustments.
- Suction: naturally, some patients have better suction than others based on factors such as their mouth structure and saliva.
- Implant retained or supported overdentures: these are anchored by dental implants, providing a more secure fit. They are ideal for patients who struggle with traditional removable dentures, have poor suction with their denture, or for those who may experience significant bone loss.
Depending on the individual, using one or more of these methods to secure a denture in place will be needed. Our professional denture team will be able to offer you great advice, based on your personal smile, on how to best secure your denture in place.
Denture Relines for ill-fitting or loose dentures
In many cases, those that have a current denture that is not fitting well or has become loose may need a denture reline due to changes in their mouth over a period of time. On average, most people need a reline every 2-3 years and where teeth have recently been extracted a reline may be required at 6 months. At Total Denture Care Perth, we offer same day cold cure relines, 24-hour heat cured relines, or soft relines to get your denture fitting like new.
A closer look at Implant Retained or Supported Overdentures for the most secure denture fit
An implant retained or supported overdenture can be created for either full or partial dentures with one or more implants used to secure the denture in place. The denture clips into place by ball or bar attachments that connect to implants, making it still removable but without needing adhesive, retainers or suction.
Through the extra support of just a few implants (as few as one implant may only be required), this has many benefits including:
- More stability
- Improved chewing and eating experience
- Less food getting stuck under denture
- Improved nutrition as wider range of foods can be eaten
- Enhanced confidence
- Enhanced comfort
- Improved speech
- Feel and function more closely to your natural teeth
- Superior look using premium materials
- Enhanced facial aesthetics, such as assists with cheek and lip support
- Firmer denture stability and retentive support in the mouth
- Less irritation and sore spots on gums
- Denture adhesives not required
- Suction not required
- Easy to remove and clean
- Helps reduce jaw bone resorption
- More cost effective than full implants
However, like any treatment, it is important to consider all factors when comparing an implant retained or supported overdenture to a traditional denture such as cost, time and suitability to name a few things.
At Total Denture Care, we understand how a secure and stable denture can drastically enhance you or your loved one’s life. With various options available across our extensive denture range, we have something to suit all individuals.
