Flexible Dentures are made from a type of nylon know as super-polyamides, which is extremely durable and strong. Being a thermoplastic, it changes shape under a high temperature which allows it to be manipulated and can then be created into a mould.

Most Valplast Flexible Partial Dentures are processed from initial consult to insert within a 2–3 week period.

The best situations for a Valplast Flexible Partial Denture include:

• Where the mouth is unlikely to change.
• Where you have suitable natural teeth with a good prognosis.
• Patients who have allergic reactions to chrome or acrylic.
• Good for patients with a gag reflex due to their size and close fit.

There are some situations where a Valplast Flexible Partial Denture may not be suitable such as:

• Where patient’s oral condition has a poor prognosis.
• To replace front anterior teeth.
• Where there is less than two retention points available.

The flexible nature of the Valplast resin (pink, nylon material) will help prevent the denture base from breaking/ fracturing; however, it is important that you maintain your Valplast denture using Valclean.

Each Valplast Flexible Denture comes with its own unique serial number, which when it is registered will give your denture a certificate of authenticity.

Yes in some circumstances it can be done. Total Denture Care will send your appliance to our certified Valplast Laboratory in Perth to have other teeth added or be relined. Sometimes an impression will be needed prior to sending away the appliance and may take a few days to be completed. In some cases, it may be beneficial to have a new denture fabricated than modify the existing one; however, at Total Denture Care we will inform you which procedure is most suitable and affordable for you.

Even though Valplast Flexible Partial Dentures have minimal chance of staining or absorbing odours, they still need to be removed and cleaned thoroughly like any other denture material. Valplast doesn’t recommend using over the counter cleaning products as they may discolour your denture and recommends Valplast Clean Denture Cleanser. Their products can be purchased from our clinic or can be ordered online at the Valplast website – www.valplast.com

Practicing good oral hygiene by removing and cleaning your appliance will help prevent gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and tooth decay. Due to the reduction of saliva flow during sleep, it is advised to not wear your dentures at night as it will increase the amount of bacteria.

Total Denture Care has its own dental laboratory to process and manufacture nearly all types of dentures. Due to the specialised nature of manufacturing chrome dentures we work closely with another local Western Australian lab who specializes in cast chrome frameworks. Most Chrome/ Metal Partial Dentures are finished within a 3 week period; however, if needed depending on availability they can be processed in a shorter period of time.

1-3% of the general population are allergic to cobalt and chromium. Patients who may suffer from this type of allergic reaction or sensitivity can also choose from a gold or titanium denture. Gold and titanium dentures have good results for those who have a reaction; however, are slightly more expensive.

In some cases where a patient’s oral condition has poor prognosis a chrome denture may not be suitable. Our Prosthetist, Steven Anthony, will assess your condition and give advice to whether a chrome denture is a suitable option for you.

The best situations for a Chrome/ Metal Partial Denture include:

• Where the mouth is unlikely to change.
• Where you have suitable natural teeth with a good prognosis.
• In patients where muscle control is compromised.
• Good for patients with a gag reflex due to their size and close fit.
• Non-allergenic – Stable material which prevents allergic reactions if combined with Valplast (Hybrid Denture).

Chrome/ Metal Partial Dentures can last a life time if the proper care is taken to clean and maintain not only the denture but your remaining natural teeth and oral cavity. The acrylic gum coloured base on the chrome denture will need to be replaced on the chrome every 5 – 10 years. Over a period of time the bone shrinkage denture wearers experience will vary depending on the patient. If minimal shrinkage occurs a reline can be provided on the gum supported areas (acrylic surface) every 2–4 years which will help to restore the fit, stability and correct height of the teeth.

Where severe bone loss occurs a reline might not be suitable and a new denture maybe required. If any of the remaining natural teeth are extracted, repairs/alterations can be made; however, depending on the number of teeth extracted, location of the teeth and level of gum shrinkage after extraction, will impact on whether the denture will still be suitable or a new denture will have to be designed. Our Prosthetist, Steven Anthony, will always assess your condition and denture prognosis at your initial consultation and will explain the best solution to suit you.

Like all dentures a maintenance check by our denture professional is recommended annually to ensure the denture is fitting well and no alterations are needed due to possible changes in the mouth. If these annual checks are left too long or once problems occur it can be more difficult to rectify, thus making it more expensive in the long run.

Chrome/ Metal Partial Dentures need to be cleaned in the morning, night time and ideally after meals. A soft brush should be used to clean the denture under running warm water. Liquid or hand soap can be used on the brush to help remove debris and also a plastic container can be used underneath to avoid damage that can occur if the denture is dropped in the sink.

Chrome/ Metal Partial Dentures are far less prone to staining or buildup of plaque, however over time, similar to natural teeth, staining can occur on all dentures. Denture cleaning tablets can be used once a week or fortnight to remove excess build up a plaque. If heavy stains or plaque cannot be removed, your Prosthetist, Steven Anthony, can give your denture a professional clean, restoring them to their beautiful original shine.

Chrome dentures are a more premium, longer lasting partial denture option. If the remaining dentition has good prognosis, chrome dentures will be more suitable and beneficial as they are a tooth-supported denture option which makes the denture more stable and helps to apply less pressure on the underlying bone & ridges that may reduce the bone resorption. Chrome dentures also have the added benefit of transferring hot and cold which blends into the temperature of the mouth, making the denture more comfortable and natural feeling. Due to the strength of the chrome framework, the denture can be made very thin which adds to the comfort and enhanced chewing and taste experience too.

Acrylic Partial Dentures make a great temporary denture for cases where the gaps of the missing teeth need to be replaced urgently, but also where there will more dental treatment needed in the near future or if the health of the remaining natural teeth are in poor condition. If any of the remaining natural teeth need to be restored or extracted, adding to the acrylic denture is very quick – in most cases Total Denture Care can have the alterations made within an hour’s time and the cost is lower than other types of dentures. Acrylic Partial Dentures are a great option when other more permanent dentures are financially unaffordable.

Allergic reactions to acrylic dentures are very rare; however, patients who suffer from an allergic reaction or sensitivity can also choose from the Chrome or Valplast (nylon/ plastic) dentures. Chrome and Valplast dentures have good results for those who have a reaction.

As a general measure, an Acrylic Partial Denture can last between 5 – 10 years. Its lifetime can be extended depending on care taken with the denture and if there are no changes with the remaining dentition.
